Funding Generations of Inspiration
Now, faculty, staff and retirees can support Miami University students in an extraordinary way.
This exclusive endowment program provides an opportunity to support the university -- its students, its programs, and its people -- through a permanent gift that is powerful, yet personal. With a minimum contribution of $10,000, which can be paid over 10 years (less than $84 a month), you can establish a permanent fund that will directly assist Miami and make a lasting impression.
Once you fulfill your $10,000 commitment, the University will match your gift with an additional $5,000.
Compassionate, dedicated faculty and staff have provided the cornerstone for Miami University's nearly 200 years of excellence. When alumni reflect on their Miami experience, they nearly always mention a beloved faculty or staff mentor who shaped their collegiate experience.
This compassion often extends beyond the classroom. Throughout its history, faculty and staff have been among the university's most generous benefactors, leaving legacies that will impact Miamians for generations to come. Recognizing the essential contributions and extraordinary impact of faculty and staff, Miami has created an additional opportunity for this special group of donors to create a legacy that will contribute to the university in perpetuity.
Please read about this new program and join with thousands of others in the Miami community who lead by example with their financial commitment.
Thank you.
Who is eligible to participate in this endowment program?
Current and retired Miami faculty and staff; widow/widower of retired faculty/staff.
Can I name the endowment?
Yes. You can name it for yourself, honor a family member, teacher, colleague, friend, or use the endowment’s purpose as its name.
How can I fund a new endowment for student support?
Miami University accepts commitments of cash, stock, or payroll deductions.
Can I make payments over time or do I have to pay the minimum $10,000 gift all at once?
You can pay the entire amount right away, or you can pledge the amount of your total gift and pay it in increments. If you are a current Miami employee, you can use payroll deduction to make payments. Your pledge must be fulfilled in 10 years.
If I use payroll deduction, how much will be taken from each paycheck?
A $10,000 pledge can be fulfilled with a monthly deduction of $83.34 over a period of 10 years (based on a 12-month pay period.)
Can I make my gift or pledge payments with a credit card?
Yes; Miami currently accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
Can I join with others to fund a Faculty/Staff/Retiree Endowment?
No; for this special program, each person (along with spouse or partner) must create a separate endowment.
Can others contribute to the fund after I create it? Yes, but you must fulfill your $10,000 commitment before the university match is awarded and the spending distribution begins.
Can I create a new endowment by naming Miami in my will?
You may use a bequest commitment to supplement an already-established endowment, but not to create a new one using this program. Once your initial commitment is fulfilled, however, you may add to your new fund through planned gifts.
What is the limit on matching funds from Miami?
The maximum match per endowment is $5,000.
When will matching funds from Miami be applied to my gift?
As soon as your fund reaches $10,000. If you make an outright gift, it will be matched immediately. If you make a pledge, it will be matched when you have made contributions totaling $10,000 to your fund.
How much money will my new endowment provide for students?
Under the current spending policy, a $15,000 endowment (your initial $10,000, plus the $5,000 University match) would provide approximately $700 for student support each year. As the fund grows, so does the amount of annual support. Endowments continue in perpetuity.
Can gifts made previously be moved into a new matchable fund?
Yes; however the program applies to new commitments made after July 1, 2006.
How long do I have to take part?
This new endowment program will be available for the duration of The Miami University Campaign For Love and Honor, scheduled for completion in 2010.
Once you have created your endowment, you may add to it over time, increasing the size and the amount of student support that is awarded. Through your generosity, your named endowment will provide a lasting legacy to future Miamians.
All charitable gifts to Miami University, including the creation of a new named endowment, are tax-deductible. However, it is not considered a charitable contribution when you give to a fund over which you have sole spending authority. |
A few examples...
A staff member creates a fund and names it after his former department chair. The staff member pays $83.34 per month through payroll deduction, for ten years. Once fully funded, Miami adds a $5,000 match to the fund.
An art instructor creates the Fine Arts Graduate Student Travel Fund, paying $2,500 a year over four years, by check and credit card. Miami adds $5,000 in matching money once the fund reaches $10,000.
Professor Jane Smith creates the Jane Q. Smith Scholarship Endowment, used to support students in her area of instruction. She pays $10,000 outright, which is immediately matched by $5,000 from Miami, for a total of $15,000 in her new fund.
