Spring 2007
Construction Update
Spring Brings Dedications
Fueled by the enduring support of donors, a wave of construction and renovation projects continues to sweep across Miami University's campus. While the projects range in status from Farmer Hall, which is just picking up steam, to the completed and recently dedicated Miami Softball Field, they stand together as symbols of the University's commitment to first-rate facilities.
According to Project Manager John Seibert, Farmer Hall is in the bid analysis phase, but the groundwork already is in place and the project is expected to move on to the next phase shortly. The East Quad Utility tunnel, an extensive multi-phased project which will supply the 140,000 square-foot building with chilled water, steam and communications, was completed during the fall.
One project that is well underway is the extensive renovation of Benton Hall, which is the third phase of the larger $23.6 million project for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. With the psychology department having moved to its new building last summer, Benton Hall, constructed in 1969, is being refurbished to centralize the computer and systems analysis department, which is presently spread out over several buildings.
Project manager Jack Williams detailed just how extensive the renovations are.
"The only things left from the original building are the outside walls, elevator, floors and support columns," Williams said. "Along with providing much-needed office space to consolidate the computer and systems analysis department, it will house the dean's suite and better classrooms and labs."
Attached to Benton Hall via a newly constructed connector is the new Engineering & Applied Science Building , which was officially dedicated on March 30. The building, which has been operational since the fall, had been undergoing finishing touches throughout the school year.
Another significant dedication took place on March 23, when Miami University 's softball team officially christened Miami Softball Field with the three-day Miami Invitational tournament. The $4.5 million facility, which includes a press box, indoor batting facility, permanent lighting and seating for 500, was completed during the summer.
Another dedication, held April 21, celebrated the School of Education and Allied Professions and the recent renovations to McGuffey and Phillips Halls.
