Judy Marquis Rymer ’61 has lived a life shaped by educators.

Among the memorable stream of teachers who inspired her own more than three-decade career in education, were a Spanish teacher from Oxford’s McGuffey School and a freshman composition instructor from Miami University. Then, of course, there were the most influential teachers of all – a mother and father who were both career educators.

Thanks to the generosity and foresight of Judy and her husband, Glenn, who have established a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) through Miami’s Office of Gift Planning, the legacy of all these influential educators lives on.

“I’ve had so much contact with students in my life, and Glenn and I both understand how important scholarships have become as the costs of higher education have increased,” says Judy, who spent more than 30 years as a professor and administrator at California State University, San Bernardino.

With a CRT, assets are placed in a trust that provides income to the donor or selected beneficiaries for their lifetimes or up to 20 years, after which the remainder is distributed to a charitable cause of the donor’s choosing. The donor also receives a federal income tax deduction and may avoid capital gains tax if the trust is funded with appreciated assets.

“We had always intended to provide for Miami through a bequest,” Judy says. “The trust just seemed to work best financially for us. It provides us with a source of income for now and will eventually go into providing scholarships for those interested in pursuing a career in teaching.”

The Marquis-Rymer Scholarship for Teacher Education recognizes Judy’s parents, Norwood Marquis, a longtime professor at Miami and then dean of education at Wright State University, and Trudy Marquis, who taught kindergarten at Oxford’s Stewart School.

The scholarship also recognizes Judy and Glenn’s appreciation for education. Judy continues to serve as a consultant for Cal State, San Bernardino, and as a member of the advisory council and campaign committee for Miami’s School of Education, Health and Society. Glenn, after retiring as a financial services broker, went back to school to pursue his passion for architectural design.

The couple rediscovered Oxford during a visit in 2005 and in 2006 purchased a home, which Glenn redesigned to accommodate occasional bed and breakfast guests, on a wooded lot outside of Oxford.

“We just love the small town and being a part of the university community,” Judy says. “It’s also been fun running a bed and breakfast. We’ve met so many nice people, and we get to tell them all about Miami.”
