School of Education, Health and Society

Transformative Leaders
For more than half of Miami University’s distinguished 200-year history, the School of Education, Health and Society has prepared its graduates to address issues of fundamental concern—from educating children to promoting the health and well being of families and communities.

Today’s Miami graduates must be highly literate and technologically competent if they are to be tomorrow’s educational leaders. The school is working to ensure that its students leave Miami with a 21st century skill set.

bullet. Encouraging students to think about change using insights from diverse perspectives.
bullet Using wireless technology and state-of-the-art instructional software and hardware to help students develop the skills they need to successfully compete in a knowledge-based global economy.
bullet Promoting partnerships with schools, agencies and businesses to provide real-world settings where theory can be put into practice.

Support for Students
Undergraduate Student Scholarships
The school seeks to establish new merit- and need-based scholarships as well as special scholarships enabling it to recruit a more diverse student body—one reflecting the diversity in Ohio schools. New scholarships also will encourage students to consider careers as specialists; special education, math, science and foreign language teachers are in chronic short supply in Ohio.

Graduate Financial Assistance
The expense of continuing education beyond the bachelor’s degree often discourages teachers from advancing their careers as curriculum specialists or administrators. The school seeks to establish fellowships for both full- and part-time graduate students who plan to return to teaching after earning an advanced degree.

Diversity Initiatives
With funding to support scholarships and programs that encourage multicultural middle and high school students to consider teaching careers, Miami can attract a more diverse student body.

Professional Development and Research Support
The school seeks funds to help students who want to explore international experiences, especially students with financial need. Funds will also be used to support internships, participation in professional organizations and student research.

Support for Faculty
To commemorate its Bicentennial, Miami University is launching its “Professorships Initiative,” a generous matching gifts program it hopes will inspire funding for 100 endowed faculty positions. Endowed chairs and professorships allow Miami to attract world-class scholars who will offer new opportunities for students and enhance the university’s ability to compete with the nation’s top institutions. The School of Education, Health and Society—and its students—will benefit greatly from an influx of new endowed faculty members.

Support for Partnerships
The school’s commitment to partnerships with schools, agencies and communities benefits students, faculty and the people of Ohio. Partnership projects with the Talawanda and Hamilton school districts and with an inner-city community in Cincinnati have garnered widespread acclaim. The benefits of partnerships include:

bullet. Opportunities for Miami faculty to teach for a semester in public schools.
bullet On-the-job professional development for classroom teachers.
bullet School and university collaboration on research topics of critical concern to schools.
bullet Documenting successful programs for the benefit of other schools and agencies.
bullet Student teaching and internship placements in a wide variety of school communities.

Technology and Equipment
The school seeks to help its graduates thrive in the digital age, which means focusing on teaching with (rather than from) technology to transform how students teach and learn. Students must be encouraged not only to learn innovative technology, but also to recognize how it can be used to create and disseminate knowledge. A center for instructional technology that brings together forward thinking scholars, instructors and practitioners will dramatically impact the future of education.

For Love and Honor
With gifts of all sizes from people who believe in its mission, the School of Education, Health and Society—and the leaders it educates—will significantly and positively impact children and adults in Ohio and beyond. Every gift counts. Please consider investing in the future of the School of Education, Health and Society during the Bicentennial Phase of The Miami University Campaign For Love and Honor.
